"The FreeWareRocks.com Super Sites!
"

====================================================

The following FREEWARE SITES

Are BY FAR  the best and most reliable sites to offer FREEWARE downloads

(As well as offering precise descriptions, unbiased commentary and download LINKS)

====================================================

NOTE:
SOME of these sites ALSO offer shareware as well

Example:
WEB ATTACK also offers SHAREWARE
- On another LINK on their site -

(But they have a TON of FREEWARE available on the link I provide!)

====================================================

-- * TIPS for DOWNLOADING FREEWARE from the WEB * -

====================================================

Prior to DOWNLOADING  ANY APPLICATION or UTILITY:

Be absolutely SURE to carefully READ the documentation PROVIDED!!!

To see and THEREBY KNOW if:

1) It is compatible (works with) your particular "OS" (Operating System)

Example:
Is it: Win 95/98/Me/2000/XP/Win XP 2003 or "MAC" (MACINTOSH) compatible.

You need to know what OS (Operating System) your computer uses and look the Homepage listing to see if this OS is included for use with any program that you might be thinking of downloading and consequently installing on your system. You can easily crash your system and even need to re-install Windows by trying to load a program that was not written for your computer’s OS.

2) Make SURE whether you are CERTAIN that it is actually FREEWARE or "SHAREWARE."

Freeware products are often subject to license agreements. Make sure to read the appropriate documentation carefully. It will tell you what, if any, restrictions the author places on the use of the program. It may be just a standard disclaimer that you use the program at your own risk

If you NEGLECT to read these instructions:

You COULD UNWITTINGLY be downloading - "TRIALWARE" or "DEMO-WARE."

3) Some programs require registration (usually requiring the downloader to e-mail to be sent to the developer with your name and e-mail address). This is done because the authors/developers would like to know a little about the kind of folks who are utilizing the program. It gives them a better idea of which direction to take for future development of the product. Additionally, by registering you will usually receive notifications about bugs, updates and new versions of the product or other information from the author. As long as there is no request for money, it may be a nuisance but at least it is free!

******ALWAYS******
******
ALWAYS******
******
ALWAYS******

View as much as you CAN from the sites you download from! CAREFULLY the program ENTIRE description...

As well as a thorough 'look over' of  the "Read Me" and HELP  Files
[that are furnished with the program after downloading].

4) ALSO make SURE to: Read the description to see Whether or NOT it is EASILY uninstallable.

5)
ALWAYS & ABSOLUTELY Utilize your UPDATED Anti-Virus program
Whenever downloading ANY programs into your computer!

You should NEVER open or install a program you download without using a Virus Checker on it first! Many freeware sites list some free programs [usually in their System Utilities / Security + pages]. Regrettably freeware anti virus programs are rapidly disappearing due to the high cost to the author of keeping them up to date. If you want a really sophisticated program that checks for all known viruses you will probably have to purchase it.

(BETTER to be SAFE than SORRY!)

5)
Do a quick SYSTEM RESTORE  -  PRIOR TO the DOWNLOAD
NOT During OR after you install the applications.

This way you can always "Turn back the clock" so to speak.

A Note About Choosing & Using Back Up Tools

===============================================

How long users you go between performing backups is their choice depending on how much (and how often) their data and information changes and how fearful you are about system crashes. If you use your computer every other day, and it mostly just for playing games or hunting around on the Internet, or for the occasional email or letter every so often, once every few weeks or even once a month might be a good thing for you.

I don't actually recommend one particular 'specific' program when it comes to back-ups. Everyone's system capabilities and preferences for deciding on what options they want and need whether they want or need incremental vs. full backup are entirely different.

For "Freeware Backup Tools" exclusively I'd recommend that you stop by SnapFiles. They are probably have at least 30+ freeware tools there; that allow various options and configurability depending on your backup preferences.

For a mix of shareware and freeware programs, I'd definitely suggest MajorGeeks Back Up page where they not only have one of the largest selections of Back Up shareware/freeware available; they also have their MajorGeeks.com home page, which is updated with the latest versions far more swiftly and reliably than any other site I know of.

What's the advantage performing the full, habitual backup and of the occasional incremental backup? Each has its benefits and costs. For the full backup you know that you have the entire file saved somewhere else, all the time. The downside is that it is going to take you longer [and use more system resources] to backup all your files all the time compared to incremental backups. And it uses up more storage and the process can interrupt your online and other program use.

For the incremental backup you are going to have all your files saved, but if you backup onto CD or DVD, then they might be split up over a couple of CDs or DVDs which means that if you have to restore any of them, you might have to spend just a little longer retrieving them. But incremental backups are very cost-efficient for storage; they take up a minimum amount of space.

There are many programs that exist in the marketplace that will create what is called an image of your hard drive. To accomplish this task; the programs Norton Ghost, PowerQuest's DriveImage  and Acronis TrueImage are three products that are very popular in many forums that I attend.

"What is freeware according to FWT. We have our own definition of the term freeware...

First of all we ONLY submit freeware for Windows OS (NOT Linux, BeOS, Mac, Palm, etc...)
The programs must be able to run under Windows 95 / 98 / 98SE / Me / NT /2000 / XP
DOS programs we only submit if they can run under Windows 32bit OS (ME / 98)
DOS programs we only submit if they can run under Windows 32bit OS (ME / 98)

What we (FWT) accept.:

1. Postcard ware - if the author want you to send a postcard if you like the program.
2. Joke ware - if the author want you to send a joke if you like the program.
3. Register ware - If you have to register to get the program.
4. Pay ware in a "free" period.
Sometimes a company or the author let his program be free for a period in order to get the program known.
5. Add ware Light - That means if the authors have ads for his own products.
6. Add-on's and Macro's, even if they are for programs that are pay ware like Excel, Words, etc.- but they off cause have to be freeware.
7. Scripts - Scripts are normally not programs to be downloaded, but pieces of codes to be copy and pasted and that is all right too - if they are free more examples to come....but you get the general idea!

Other [ FreeWareRocks.com ] "Freeware Website Navigator!" favorite sites:

Note: Completely FREE Software.com (CFS) is now a “members-only” site.

A few words from COMPUABLE, the site administrator of FreeWareRocks.com...

About the website which is currently "named"
Completely FREE Software

CompletelyFREESoftware.com was originally created and founded by a freeware fan and former pirate named Graham Pockett (for a brief bio about Graham Pockett see: Confessions Of A Software Pirate). Mr. Pockett had grown tired of experiencing utter disappointment while visiting many of the so-called "free software" sites which were not actually offering freeware at all. More often than not, the free software which was listed turned out in reality to be shareware that was time-limited, (that the user must pay a registration fee to continue to use) or worse, turned out to be or demo software versions which are not really functional.

Viewers of such deceptive sites [especially those who're new to freeware]

are often discouraged to discover only the download itself was ‘free!’

This very often continues to be the case; to this very day.

The CFS site was formerly an ad-based site and one of the few "completely" Freeware-ONLY sites available on the Internet just a few years ago. The few ADS that they did have were non-distracting to the viewer and all of the software was offered "completely free" of any charge whatsoever. However the CFS site currently features membership. As those of you who frequent my sites well know, I rarely [well; just about never, actually] list any links on any of my websites which link-up to and/or refer sites that charge money and offer absolutely nothing on that site for free.

Alas, with income from generated from advertising having severely declined since the DotCom bubble burst in 2000, paid membership was CFS's only option or they would have been forced to entirely close the site and their extensive database of freeware programs would have been lost. One of the advantages of being a members-only site is that they can now value-add the site by hosting many programs which have not generally been available on the Internet for a long time.

However this CFS website is working to make top quality older utilities still available for next to nothing.

Graham Pockett's has certainly "paid his dues" by making available the formerly free site [Completely FREE Software (CFS)] which linked to stable, reliable and carefully designed "oldie-but-goodies" internet-downloadable freeware program installation files and reviews. Unfortunately, Graham had no choice but to prudently considering charging a small membership fee when the dot-com boom went kaboom back in 2000-2001, and his plan is to currently make available to the CFS Members best-of-breed older programs [and some newer] utilities offered in a wide variety of categories. Watch this site in the months to come.

Lord knows, those of us who benefited and flourished from years of enjoyment from their available freeware program and utilities program listings while CFS was an ad-based site; at the very least, owe the CFS Software folks the benefit of a "look see." A magnificent selection of completely free Windows & DOS software is tested, reviewed and rated. Free weekly email newsletter, freeware CDs available, independent reviews, to probably one of the largest "freeware-only site" collections of available program links in the history of the World Wide Web!

The software listing pages currently can only be accessed by members. CFS does not charge to individually download the freeware listed on this site (even when they are hosting it themselves) and they do not charge on a "per visit" basis. All the software listed on this site is "completely free" as advertised and no payment to any software author is necessary.

Note: Completely FREE Software (CFS) is a “members-only” site.
But it is well worth the modest amount asked for membership
(1 month – $5, 1 year – $15, 2 years – $25, or lifetime – $35)
There are currently over 900 programs (in excess of 1,500MB) hosted by CFS
Many of which are available no-where else!

This would make a terrific "gift that keeps on giving" to someone you know who loves using their computer!

FreewareHome.com
This is one of the most reliable sites on the web for users to find links to download program installation files that are actually freeware. you'll find no demos, trial versions and/or shareware here, because FreewareHome defines 'freeware' as a fully functional program that the author or company allows anyone to use without asking for any payment whatsoever for it. Also among the requirements before listing are no "requests for money" in the documentation, no nag screens asking for payment or donations and finally no time limit or disablement to any of its functions. They also stopped listing ADWARE when the companies who provided the ads developed ad tracking to be able to target the ads.

They allow freeware which is called "Postcardware" that the author requests only that satisfied users send a postcard of their home town or something like that; or E-Mailware (similar to postcardware, the developer requests that the downloader send an e-mail to the author); but it must not require payment of money. Any software submitted that does not fulfill these requirements is rejected immediately.

It is also worthy to note that Freeware Home only provides you with the hyperlinks to download sites which are maintained by other people. They do NOT keep program files on the FreewareHome server therefore they cannot check the download file for viruses, you MUST do this yourself.

Freeware Files.com
This site is a double-whopper as it has a high-functioning search engine which makes it very easy to find your choice of a specific type and/or variety of freeware applications. Numerous well-organized categories with oodles of freeware listed and utilities within the following category titles:

 | Business/Organize | Desktop | Drivers | Games | Graphics | Internet Tools | Home & Education | MP3/Multimedia | Programming | Utilities | Web Development |

This Freeware Files.com site was 'one of the greats' just a few years ago and still remains an excellent resource for freeware-finds and it is packed with other goodies like "Popular Libraries & DLLs" as well as "Popular Drivers" New Files and Most Popular categories.

However it appears that over time, this site has become somewhat  "loud" with animated ["quickly-look-over-here-at-me-me-me!"] advertisements. The site also has come to offer those annoyingly commercialized more-than-just-occasional popup window
